We expect the first 30/35 hours with south/south-east wind – very light breeze to 12-14 knots max. We should pass the strait more or less on Sunday morning, turn Stromboli in the afternoon and start sailing towards Egadi with a long reach turning into upwind as far as we get closer to Palermo.
On Monday, after an unpredictable and hopefully short transition, a strong mistral is forecasted. This should take us to Malta sailing with some 25-30 knots downwind. Simulations preview our arrival around Tuesday morning… we will see!
Updating October, 24th at 12:00 CET boats are crossing Messina strait all in the lee of the Calabria coast in order to avoid the stream. Altair3 is among the best, whereas Ars Una is getting closer to the strait, sailing from east.

We are in Eolie now, off Salina. Very light and changing wind. It has been a faceted Messina strait; it started in the dead calm and finished in strong wind – 30/35 knots. On the finish we had also a current as high as 5 knots. We did surf for almost one hour at a some 20 knots speed (top score: 22.8). Now, we are going to sail a long reach towards Palermo and Egadi, where we are expected to arrive in the afternoon. From there on, the clockwise wind rotation should be the sign for the arrival of mistral which will take us to Malta… at least, we hope so!

It has been a long night sailed in breeze. In the morning, the south-western we were waiting for, started to blow. So, the route to Egadi became a long upwind leg, 100 nautical miles long.
On board it is all ok; now competitors, with which we were sailing in Stromboli, come farer. Then long reach up to Pantelleria and downwind leg in some 20 knots wind up to Lampedusa and then Malta. The arrival is expected by tomorrow afternoon around 4.00 p.m.
